This painting is an appropriation, inspired by a large oil painting by Polly Thayer (“Circles”, 1928) in the NBMAA. The spin on it is the face peering back at us, and holds a reference to a poem by Derek Walcott, “Love After Love”– which is written into the painting–“The time will come when with elation you will greet yourself.. you will love again the stranger who was your self…Take down the love letters from the bookshelf,…peel your own image from the mirror.”
